Lecture One – Course Intro & The Hacker Ethic

Introduction to me & the course. General overview of the “Hacker Ethic“ and how it relates to the notion of FreeSkool. In-class we did a quick survey related to some inaccurate assumptions of privacy that are commonly attributed to the internet. We talked about the structure of the internet as a a web of intermediate computers that have impact on our privacy. Finally, we ended on a quick overview of the sorts of topics I’d like to cover in the course. Each was given a quick explanation and linked to FreeSkool where possible.

Lecture Two – Off the Record (OTR) Messaging

Following what we learned in last week’s lecture about privacy and the internet, we spent lecture two learning about secure IM chats. We covered what OTR Messaging is, reviewed why we might need it at all, and then learned a bit more about how it worked. A quick demo of setting up OTR in Pidgin was shown. We also spent some time this lecture discussing the recent G20 arrest of Kristen Peterson and Byron Sonne. See the resources section for more information.
